The Non-Machines Residencies offer a programme for artists and researchers seeking time and space to develop their work within a context that values material processes, ecological thinking, and non-computational or analog computation forms of knowledge.
The programme provides residents with the opportunity to live and work in Greece, across two distinct environments: an urban setting in Athens and a coastal landscape in Livanates. The combination of these sites allows for different rhythms of work, from concentrated studio practice to outdoor, site-responsive experimentation.
The aim of the residencies is to support focused, self-directed research, while creating conditions for exchange — between residents, local contexts, and non-human actors. Rather than producing predefined outcomes, the programme emphasizes process, attention, and the gradual development of ideas.
Residents are encouraged to engage with questions such as how life unfolds beyond technological optimisation, how knowledge emerges through material interaction, and how artistic practice can operate within broader ecological relations.
Living and Working
Residents are provided with accommodation and workspace in both locations.
In Athens, the residency is situated in a small compound of two houses with shared studio spaces, a library, workshop, and a garden with fruit trees. The space supports flexible use — living, working, and informal presentations.
In Livanates, residents stay in a seaside apartment with a large studio and terraces. A nearby field with olive and pomegranate trees offers additional space for outdoor work and experimentation.
The programme encourages working with locally available, reused, and repurposed materials, often sourced from the immediate surroundings. A DIY biolab setup and basic toolkits are available to support experimental practices.
Programme Context
The Non-Machines Residencies operate as a small-scale, evolving environments shaped by its residents and surroundings. The atmosphere varies depending on the season, with periods of quiet, focused work alternating with moments of shared activity, visits, and informal gatherings.
Residents may encounter local communities, visiting practitioners, and non-human organisms as part of their working process. These interactions are considered integral to the development of the work.
While the residencies do not require a final outcome, participants are invited to share their process in a public or semi-public format — such as an open studio, talk, or informal presentation.
Participation
The programme is open to artists, researchers, friends and practitioners from a wide range of disciplines, including but not limited to visual arts, design, architecture, theory, ecology, and interdisciplinary practices.
Fees and Support
The Arkesinis 9 residency fee is €500 per month, including accommodation and access to shared spaces, while the Livanates residency fee is €350 per month.
The Non-Machines Residencies may offer limited financial support through collaborative arrangements. Selected residents can also receive support letters for external funding applications.
